Andreas,
Here in the US, 12 MBit uploads are rare. And if you can get one, it’s
going to be expensive.
Basically unless you are in an area where they offer fiber service, you
aren’t going to get anything above 6Mbit at any sort of reasonable cost.
Most people here deal with 3 Mbit or less for uploads.

A good reason is a really faster delivery over the web! It takes a

OK, I’ll go see a shrink tomorrow morning if you tell me right now
that has never been a DVD officially released, by a major studio,
with a virus on it. Do we have a deal?

Let’s not also forget that while FTP might be more reliable in terms of
preventing transmission errors, it’s not necessarily more reliable in
terms of actually getting the data to the recipient.
An 8 Gig file will take 6-7 hours to transfer over a 3MBit connection.
A lot can go wrong in that much time and if the connection is broken or
dropped, you might have to start over.
If you have to restart a 6-hour transfer a few times on a time-sensitive
job, dropping a DVD-R, DLT or drive into your overnight delivery...

One of the replicators we do a lot of work with uses an Aspera server
http://www.asperasoft.com/technology/index.html
We upload a huge number of titles to them each month. Works
brilliantly. I get so spoilt using it, I hate having to write DLT’s
and Plant direct discs now.
We are lucky though having high bandwidth upload facilities.
Cheers

But they can go bad and corrupt an image as well… Pen drives don’t last forever (like any drive). They will start to fail eventually, so you should still use at least an MD5 sum so the replicator to verify the data…
And, personally, I verify ANY data copied over the USB port to any device if it’s critical data. USB copies can result in corrupted data occasionally, so the data should always be verified. I would verify a USB transfer before I’d verify a DLT tape write… I’ve never had a bad tape write (that finished, anyway… I’ve had...

I won’t even mention the possibility of a virus infection of an USB
drive. And the repercussions.
